PHYSICS - STANDARD OPTION

Beneath all chemical, geological, and biological events lie physical explanations, and an education in physics seeks to provide some of
these explanations while giving the student the tools to ask more questions. The Standard Option in physics is designed to give this background. Courses introduce the student to major physical theories—mechanics, electricity and magnetism, thermodynamics, relativity, and quantum mechanics. In addition to a solid basis in general physics, this option includes a broad range of topical courses in fields of current interest, including astronomy, optics, and solid-state physics, as well as the requisite mathematical background.

The education experience of the Standard Option is not confined to the lecture hall. Within the Standard Option are courses which provide modern laboratory skills, such as the quantum and the modern optics laboratories. Undergraduate physics majors are strongly encouraged to take part in special projects, and to this end

Special Problems (Phys 499) is a requirement. Many students also become involved in research programs at WSU. This provides a direct experience of what is involved in conducting original research in physics. Together, these experiences give the student the skills needed to work in various areas of physics and related fields.

The student who completes the program will have learned skills applicable not only to research in physics, but anywhere a critical and analytic approach is required.

OPTION A: PHYSICS - STANDARD

(This program yields a Bachelor of Science in Physics Degree with a minor in Mathematics)

Notes:

1: GER = General Education requirements (see the University Bulletin).

2: MATH(3) or (6) = Six hours of MATH beyond 315 are required. Approved choices include MATH 340, 360, 375, 401, 402, 415, 420, 440, 441, 443, 448. Italicized entries are recommended
